Medical science has progressed exponentially in recent times, but scientists are still left with unanswered questions when it comes to the human body. "Medical Mysteries" looks at some of the rarest disorders and syndromes in medicine today. Identical twins are fascinating -they can look the same, can act the same and often share similar thoughts, even when one is unaware the other twin exists. ABC News tells the story of two women - twins adopted separately at birth and reunited in mid-life. Then ABC News reports on a fight for survival when twins attached to the same placenta struggle in the womb for the nutrients they need to survive. TTTS, or Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome, confronts parents with brutal choices. Faced with losing either one or both of the twins, they must often choose between risky laser-surgery or termination. The report looks at two couples afflicted by TTTS. ABC News follows one couple on an emotional rollercoaster as they do whatever they can to save their babies, while the other couple provides perspective on what can be gained or lost in this life-and-death drama. Finally, could it be a medical first? His neighbors know him as Sanjay Kumar, the pregnant man. For much of his 36 years, Sanjay has had a belly so distended that he looks like he is about to deliver a baby. Expecting to find a tumor, doctors operate. What they find is Sanjay's long lost twin, a deceased silent passenger borne by Sanjay through the decades.

If you watch daytime television, you can see the order in Judge Joe Brown's court. It's a long way from South Central Los Angeles, to digging ditches to get to UCLA Law School, to becoming the first African-American prosecutor in Shelby County, Tennessee, to morphing into a TV judge. Joe Brown wasn't the first judge to move from the courtroom to the television studio, but his transition was among the more surprising, because the way Joe Brown conducted his judgeship in Memphis, Tennessee, the courtroom was only a small part of the story. Joe Brown became famous for tailoring sentences to fit the criminal, for keeping tabs on people after he sentenced them, for, in short being a "hands-on," community leader kind of jurist. It's not Iraq, or Israel, or Afghanistan. But it is a region being torn apart by war and chaos, and is costing millions of lives. The war in Congo is very difficult to actually see. No one is quite sure what is going on in the countryside because it is so dangerous. There are U.N. peacekeepers there, although short of controlling a couple of the towns, it's unclear just what exactly they will be able to do. The people caught up between the opposing sides out in the countryside are on their own, and they're paying the price. Congo's civil war has raged for years this way, a bloody struggle between rival ethnic groups, the Hema and Lendu tribes, that has been supercharged by greed. Congo is cursed by its wealth of natural resources, gold, diamonds, and other minerals. Human lives are cheap by comparison. To his supporters, he is a charismatic populist committed to helping the poor. To his detractors, he follows in a long tradition of Latin American military leaders, a strongman who will brook no opposition with increasingly dictatorial tendencies. He led a failed coup in his country in 1992 but then swept to power in 1998, elected (twice) on an anti-corruption platform. He has weathered a coup attempt against him, a recall referendum and a general strike. In the battle of the rich against the poor, the poor are solidly behind him and he is putting his money where his mouth is -- pouring his country's oil windfall into public health, education and state-subsidized groceries. Who is this man, and why has he become such a thorn in the side of the United States? He blames the large poverty gap in Latin America on the United States (for backing free market reforms), and his anti-American rhetoric is striking a chord, and not just in his own country. This report features a remarkable AIDS patient, Nkosi Johnson, a little boy you won't soon forget. In June 2001 correspondent Jim Wooten reported the obituary of an AIDS patient, a young twelve-year-old boy in South Africa who was born HIV-positive and outlived the prediction of his doctors by years.
