Castle: Season 3
Manufacturer: Disney Brand: BUENA VISTA HOME VIDEO
Famous mystery novelist Richard Castle and NYPD Detective Kate Beckett return for the suspenseful Third Season of ABC's brilliantly funny series, CASTLE. Enjoy every inspired idea and flirtatious moment as this fiery duo solve the strangest homicides New York has to offer. It's the most entertaining season yet as Castle's wildly funny storytelling skills work their way into every case. Between his mixed-up partnership with Beckett and his relationships with his diva mother and his clever daughter, Alexis, Castle is always on his toes. Crime fighting has never been this much fun! Get on the beat and relive every wild and witty moment in this 5-disc DVD set. Castle continues its strong run through its third season, mixing the grim work of the New York Police Department's homicide investigations with a light touch of humor based in its characters. The cast remains essentially the same: bestselling novelist Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion), who shadows Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) as research for his character Nikki Heat; bromantic detective partners Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Esposito (Jon Huertas), Captain Montgomery (Ruben Santiago-Hudson), and medical examiner Lainie (Tamala Jones); and Castle's mother (Susan Sullivan) and daughter, Alexis (Molly Quinn). And while romance develops for a number of them, Castle and Beckett continue their interplay of flirtation mixed with exasperation. Add another character to the mix: the city of New York, which reveals its many sides--Central Park, the subway system, the bar and steampunk subcultures--in many of the weekly murders. Castle might be best epitomized in consecutive midseason episodes: in the first, Laura Prepon guest-stars as actress Natalie Rhodes, who has been cast to play the big-screen version of Nikki Heat, and the cast's differing and revolving reactions to her are very funny. The following episode ratchets up the intensity in the newest development in the search for the killer of Beckett's mother. There's also a notable two-parter in which Castle and Beckett are trapped in a freezer as they try to find a dirty bomb somewhere in the city. Other guest stars include Lance Henriksen as an alien-abduction expert, Corbin Bernsen as a soap-opera star, Jane Seymour as a soap writer's mom, Adrian Pasdar as a Homeland Security agent, Bruce Davison as the DA, Michael McKean as a beauty-pageant sponsor, and Gene Simmons as himself. Also appearing are mystery writers Dennis Lehane and Michael Connelly, who leave an empty place at Castle's poker table for the late Stephen J. Cannell. The core of the show, of course, is Castle and Beckett, from the opening of the season when Castle hasn't called or visited the department in months, to Beckett's complicated relationships with her original training officer, Royce (Jason Beghe), or her perpetually absent boyfriend. Then not long after one breathless moment in which it seems "Casckett" might become a reality, things come to a head in the season-ending cliffha...
Sons of Anarchy: Season 3
Manufacturer: 20th Century Fox Brand: Twentieth Century Fox
The sins of the father come crashing down on the son in the stunning, suspense-filled Season Three of Sons of Anarchy! Chaos and confusion reign after Jax’s infant son has been kidnapped and Gemma (Golden Globe winner Katey Sagal) has been framed for murder. When Abel’s trail leads SAMCRO to Belfast, Ireland, secrets are revealed and the bonds of brotherhood are shattered. Jax is left reeling with more questions than answers as he struggles with the legacy of his father, the future of the club, and the fate of his family. The series may be named after a (fictional) Northern California motorcycle club, but with the release of this four-disc set of 13 episodes and bonus material, it's clearer than ever that Sons of Anarchy is about a lot more than hoods 'n' Harleys. SAMCRO (the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original chapter), as they're known, is an extended family of folks who care about one another, look out for one another, fight for one another… Heck, they're just like us--at least until the guns come out, drugs are dealt, murders are committed, a baby is kidnapped, and other squirrelly stuff happens. This time around, they're plagued by two big problems. As the first episode opens, Abel, the infant son of MC member Jackson "Jax" Teller (Charlie Hunnam, a fine actor and Brad Pitt look-alike) and his baby mama, Dr. Tara Knowles (Maggie Siff), has been abducted, most likely by some rogue members of the Irish Republican Army (the efforts of Jax and his "brothers" to find Abel, which include a trip to Dublin, is a thread that unravels throughout the season); what's more, they have another baby on the way. Meanwhile, Jax's mother, Gemma (Katey Sagal, excellent once again), wife of club leader Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman), has been framed for a murder she didn't commit, which more than complicates her efforts to look after her father, who's slipping into Alzheimer's following the death of his wife. It's a tribute to Sons creator Kurt Sutter (who also portrays the character Otto in several episodes) and his team that they're able to make us care about a bunch of folks most of us would normally cross the street to avoid. The cast, which includes some fine actors from the United Kingdom (including Hunnam), several veterans from popular shows like Deadwood and Game of Thrones, and guest stars like Hal Holbrook (as Gemma's dad), Drea de Matteo, and even Sonny Barger (a real-life Hell's Angel), is substantial, and the storylines are legion (like many ongoing series, this one may require newcomers to do some quick catching up before getting a handle on what's going on). There's plenty of violence (though it's fairly tame compared to the show's cable counterparts), the music is outstanding (you're not likely to find a song by the great English guitarist-singer-songwriter Richard Thompson featured on any other shows), and the writing, acting, and production values are top-notch all around. Sons of Anarchy has a consisten...

Person of Interest: The Complete First Season (DVD)Jim Caviezel (The Thin Red Line), Michael Emerson (Lost) and Taraji P. Henson (Hustle & Flow) team up in this thought-provoking crime action drama from The Dark Knight's Jonathan Nolan and J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot Productions (Fringe, Lost, Alias). Set in New York City, this procedural centers on an ex-CIA agent, presumed dead, who partners with a mysterious billionaire to prevent violent crimes.]]> A high-concept show that isn't afraid to get down and dirty, this latest exercise in paranoid worldbuilding from producer J.J. Abrams provides an addictive combination of action and future tech. Series creator Jonathan Nolan (brother of Christopher) lays out the premise at a furious clip: an eccentric tech genius (Lost's Michael Emerson) enlists a shadowy soldier-of-fortune (Jim Caviezel) to help with his pet project--a machine with seemingly endless surveillance capabilities. Utilizing the device's ability to identify threats before they happen, they set out to right future wrongs, attracting the attention of a dogged New York cop (Taraji P. Henson) in the process. Were Person of Interest content to remain at the level of weekly procedural, it would be a very good one, with every installment boasting well-choreographed fight scenes, Emerson's impeccably weird comedy timing, and a thorny morality that keeps the methods of the protagonists edging into the black. (A standout early episode, featuring Linda Cardinelli as a doctor with a hidden past, boasts an open-ended resolution that would do Elmore Leonard proud.) Thankfully, however, Nolan and co. also show an ability to play the long game, cannily inserting flashbacks that hint at a bigger mystery, introducing a strangely empathetic recurring supervillain, and laying out minor plot elements that pay off big further down the line. The show's impressive planning also extends to the supporting cast, with Henson given a character arc that many leading characters would envy. (Kudos as well to Kevin Chapman, as a former dirty cop whose slowly growing conscience provides many of the best moments.) The best element of the show, however, may well be The Machine itself, an initially implausible gimmick that quickly becomes a character in its own right; an omnipresent asset that--pay close attention to the evolving graphics overlays--may not be quite as passive an observer as its creator insists. By the time the final cliffhanger episode of the season rolls around, it's apparent that the show's mythology still has plenty of unexplored depths to delve. Extras include a lengthier cut of the pilot, a fascinating/scary look at the current state of surveillance tech, and a brief gag reel showcasing Caviezel's ability to do a killer Christopher Walken. --Andrew Wright
