Jeff Beck is undeniably one of the world's greatest guitar players. Technically brilliant, he is renowned for pushing musical boundaries and has excelled across many different genres from rock and jazz, to pop and blues. Live In Tokyo was filmed at the Tokyo Dome City Hall in Japan on April 9th, 2014. These Japanese dates were the first to feature Jeff Beck's new backing band of Jonathan Joseph (drums), Nicolas Meier (guitars) and Rhonda Smith (bass) and the set list includes some material from his new, as yet unreleased, studio album. In contrast to Beck's previous visual releases, both filmed in small clubs, Live In Tokyo is filmed in a major concert arena and has a very different, more expansive feel. This Is Elvis: Special Edition (Dbl DVD)]]> Originally released in 1981, Andrew Solt and Malcolm Leo's This Is Elvis was one of the first in-depth examinations of the life and work of Elvis Presley. Issued here in a two-disc set that pairs the theatrical version with a 1983 re-edit that adds some 40 minutes to the original, it combines newsreel footage, home movies, television and movie clips, and extensive re-enactments in an absorbing bio-documentary that's well worth watching--if only because interest in the singer apparently never diminishes (the 2007 DVD release date coincides with the 30th anniversary of Presley's death). The success (or failure, depending on one's point of view) of This Is Elvis rides in part on a single decision made by Solt and Leo, who co-produced, directed, and wrote the film: namely, to have the tale told by Presley himself. Not the real Presley, of course; Ral Donner, himself a rock singer of minor repute in the '50s and '60s, provides a reasonably authentic impersonation of Presley's voice (four on-screen actors portray him at various ages in the course of the film). Thus we have an "Elvis" who returns from beyond the grave to hold forth on such matters as the death of his beloved mother, his stint in the Army, his marriage to Priscilla and the birth of Lisa Marie, the skein of awful movies that preoccupied him during the '60s (thus sidelining him from the pop music scene while the Beatles and Bob Dylan were changing the world), and his des...

This DVD features 13 full length Guns N Roses music videos, including their top hits. Here's a baker's dozen of Guns N' Roses' most explosive and memorable music videos from 1987 to 1993, and what a lesson they provide in the early evolution of visual style on MTV. Looking back, it seems Guns N' Roses embraced almost every "type" of music-video setting: "Welcome to the Jungle," for instance, finds rapid images of the band's stage performance interspersed with a semi-narrative featuring Axle Rose as a newcomer to the big bad city. "Paradise City" is set against an arena sound check, while "Sweet Child O' Mine" is structured around the now-threadbare idea of a video documentary about a video production. A couple of obsessive themes emerge from this anthology, the starkest involving love and watery deaths ("Don't Cry" and "November Rain"). Most interesting is the opiate-like distortions of "The Garden" and the surreal "Since I Don't Have You," starring Gary Oldman as a grinning devil. --Tom Keogh
