On August 10th of the year 2010 the Holy Empire of Britannia began a campaign of conquest, its sights set on Japan. Operations were completed in one month thanks to Britannias deployment of new mobile humanoid armor vehicles dubbed Knightmare Frames. Japans rights and identity were stripped away, the once proud nation now referred to as Area 11. Its citizens, Elevens, are forced to scratch out a living while the Britannian aristocracy lives comfortably within their settlements. Pockets of resistance appear throughout Area 11, working towards independence for Japan. Lelouch, an exiled Imperial Prince of Britannia posing as a student, finds himself in the heart of the ongoing conflict for the island nation. Through a chance meeting with a mysterious girl named C.C., Lelouch gains his Geass, the power of the king. Now endowed with absolute dominance over any person, Lelouch may finally realize his goal of bringing down Britannia from within! The mecha adventure Code Geass Lelouch of Rebellion (2006) takes place in the year 2017 of an alternate future--seven years after the Holy Empire of Brittania conquered Japan. Lelouch Lamperouge, a Brittanic prince who's been living secretely in Japan, stumbles into a rebel plot to steal a top-secret weapon. Rather than the poison gas they expected, the weapon is girl who transfers the Power of Geass, the ability to control the minds of others, to Lelouch. As other members of the Imperial Family murdered his mother, Lelouch joins the Japanese rebels, some of whom are students from his high school. Adopting the pseudonym of Zero, he dresses up in a cape and mask that look like an Erté theater costume to confront his friend Suzaku, who pilots the new Brittanic super-mecha. Obvious political references abound in Code Geass: the Brittanic Empire is the world's only superpower and its leaders battle against terrorism. Brittanic officers refer to the Japanese as "monkeys," a common slur during WW II. The needlessly convoluted plot gives Code Geass the feel ofan elaborate Gundam adventure enacted by the cast of X. (Rated 13 and older: violence, nudity, risqué humor, racial slurs) --Charles Solomon
