There are places in America where the unthinkable is happening -- too many babies are dying. In most cities, black babies are dying at three times the rate of white babies. That's what's happening in Memphis, Tennessee, the city with the nation's highest rate of infant mortality. A baby dies there on average every 43 hours. But many people are working to change that startling statistic. ABC News travels to Memphis and follows a black teenage mother-to-be who is mentored by a volunteer from a white suburban church in order to ensure that both mother and baby stay healthy. The surprising relationship between these two women, the poor black mother and the white mentor of comfortable means, becomes the emotional center of the documentary. ABC News reports the medical story of infant mortality -- being born prematurely is the primary reason for infant deaths. She also finds dedicated people in Memphis begging for attention to be paid to infant mortality. For more than thirty years, millions of desperate people from around the world - the sick, the crippled, the terminally ill -- have made a pilgrimage to the remote high plateaus of central Brazil in search of a cure. They travel to see a man who is said to have miraculous healing powers and can supposedly perform surgeries without pain or even anesthesia. His acolytes call him 'John of God.' In a February 10, 2005 report, ABC News traveled to Brazil to find out whether these incredible stories could possibly be true, whether 'John of God' is, as his believers claim, a miracle man, or, as his detractors argue, a charlatan. Now ABC News revisits some of the unforgettable people featured in the original report - including an actress with breast cancer who rejected surgery and a San Francisco attorney with Lou Gehrig's disease -- to see whether they found the miracle cures they so desperately sought. Miracle on the Hudson:A US Airways Airbus A320 was apparently knocked out of the sky by birds and spectacularly splashed down alongside Manhattan's skyscrapers on to the Hudson River. Sullenberger III as a hero.Bird Strikes:Birds fly into airplanes every day, and most do so without causing major damage. It usually doesn't even register as turbulence, said John Ostrom, who chairs the Bird Strike Committee USA, formed in 1991 to analyze bird strike data and advise the aviation industry. But bird strikes can be deadly, with more than 200 people killed since 1988 because of airborn collisions with birds, according to Ostrom's committee.President Bush Says Goodbye:President Bush bids farewell to the Nation.Airdate: 1/15/2009When sold by Amazon.com, this product will be manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. Even though they use public airwaves to raise tax free funds, there's little monitoring of what television ministries broadcast. The government didn't regulate these television ministries because religious liberty is a senstive political issues in the United States. It is the hard hearted question that the US must ask in the post cold war era. As we witness the carnage in trouble spots around the world, what will we tolerate, and what is so terrible that we must intervene? Liberia is not as close as Haiti, does not have the oil of Kuwait, and has not been covered on the evening news the way Somalia and Bosnia were, but a brutal civil war most of us barely knew about was taking place. There's something else about Liberia, the long US involvement in the country. From the freed American slaves who landed on the west coast of Africa in 1822, it has been a kind of quasi colony of the US ever since. As of 1996, some 2,000 US troops were stationed on ships off the coast, while a small band of diplomats did what they could on the ground to protect lives.Correspondent: John McWethyAirdate: 6/6/1996When sold by Amazon.com, this product will be manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media.
