The complete fourth season of the TV series The Simple Life. For being one of the shows that's often thought of as an example of reality TV's origins, there's never been much reality in the overly long-lived series The Simple Life. This two-sided, single disc of the fourth (and last) season has even less to do with reality than any of its preceding installments. Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie are still acting their parts of simpleton celebrities thrust into the "real" lives of regular folk, but during the contractually obligated production of what had become an astonishingly popular show, the poor little rich girls were in the midst of a bitter feud. They hated each others' guts, weren't speaking, and thanks to the machinations of their individual publicity experts, the whole world knew it. Consequently, the two rarely share screen time together except for ample sequences of split-screening, which makes for an even more bizarre pairing for two dim-witted million-heiresses who remain famous for nothing more that, well, being famous. Season four consists of a variety of slices of suburban Los Angeles family life with the wife/mother role being taken over on alternate days by either Paris or Nicole. As usual, they sneer and make fun of the lower class that they visit--all the while showing absolutely no class of their own. Their feud is vaguely addressed in the first episode, with the other nine being fairly rote imitations of their earlier-season forays into the humdrum of screaming kids, grocery shopping, preparing food, bill-paying, and every other mundane things the girls have been coached into criticizing and laughing at by the show's producers. We're invited into some parts of the girls' "real" lives with glimpses into their homes amidst their psychological destruction of others'. But as with the prior seasons, the can't-look-away-from-the-train-wreck aspect is the thing that keeps our attention. They hate us and we hate them, so it's the very definition of symbiotic entertainment. Since they also hate each ot...

WELCOME TO HOOVER, ALABAMA, WHERE FOOTBALL IS A WAY OF LIFE. FOLLOW THE HOOVER HIGH SCHOOL BUCCANEERS AS THEY CHASE THEIR 4TH STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE IN 5 YEARS, ALL WHILE BALANCING THENORMAL PRESSURES OF BEING HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS. It's the opposite of Freaks and Geeks. MTV's documentary series Two-A-Days is a look at the lives of the popular kids, the varsity football players and cheerleaders of Alabama's Hoover High. If the film-turned-TV program Friday Night Lights is fiction that feels like fact, Two-A-Days takes the fiction out of that equation. The show spends an entire season with the Buccaneers--two practices every day. At the start of 2005, the Bucs are in the midst of a 23-game winning streak. That can't last forever. It doesn't. As in the NBC drama, the town revolves around football, which adds to the stress level, i.e. when the Bucs lose, the community mourns. The primary players are Ross (quarterback), Repete (defensive end), Goose (defensive tackle), and Max and narrator Alex (safetys). As Alex notes in the pilot ("Kickoff"), "At Hoover, football is like a religion and the players on our high school team are celebrities." The top dog is tough-talking head coach Rush Propst, who gives R. Lee Ermey's Full Metal Jacket drill sergeant a run for the money. They're a charismatic bunch, but it's too bad gentle giant Bryan, a band member during the off-season, gets such short shrift. In the first season (the series was renewed for a second), the players deal with injuries, demanding parents, and suspicious girlfriends. They ease the pressure with pranks and parties. Their biggest pressure: Will the Buccaneers win their fourth consecutive state championship or will they let personal problems get in the way? The answer comes in the eighth episode ("One Last Game"). The ninth ("What Next?") wraps up the rest of the year, while the third disc ("Overtime") features highlights, outtakes, and promo spots. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

FOLLOW THE REAL-LIFE ADVENTURES OF 'LAGUNA BEACH' STAR LAUREN (LC) CONRAD AS SHE MOVES TO L.A. TO EXPLORE A GLAMOROUS NEW WORLD OF FUN, FASHION & FRIENDS. Fans of Laguna Beach will love the first season of The Hills, which follows Laguna's Lauren Conrad as she attends fashion school in Los Angeles and works as an intern at Teen Vogue magazine. OK, so that's the premise for this quasi-reality MTV series. But in reality, the show is an excuse to watch pretty young people make out, break up, get back together, and break up some more. The show has more in common with a daytime drama than a documentary; none of the subjects worries too much about paying rent for their glamorous apartments or designer clothes. But when it comes to dating, the Geneva Convention could learn a thing or two about negotiating from these gals. Lauren fans may be dismayed to learn that Jason, the monosyllabic Lothario who cheated on her in the second season of Laguna Beach is back. And instead of going on dates with the thousands of young men who would love to have a pretty blonde on their arms (and get the opportunity to appear on TV to boot!), Lauren allows Jason to get back into her good graces--even though he hasn't matured since high school. Or figured out how to treat a woman. Or learned how to talk better. It's actually heartbreaking watching her struggle with a relationship that we can all see is doomed. Or is it? The season finale ends with the kind of dilemma we all wish we could've faced when we were 19 or 20: spend the summer working in Paris or move into a beach house with your boyfriend and frolic on the beach for three months. Paris? Jason? Hmmmm. You'd think that'd be a no-brainer. Also on hand to offer support are Lauren's friends Heidi and Audrina. The cast always looks chic and freshly made up (even after getting out of bed) and the cameras somehow always manage to be in the right place to capture romantic moments (and drama). It's easy to make fun of this show because of the preposterous setup that this sun-kissed life i...

No Description Available.Genre: TelevisionRating: NRRelease Date: 1-MAY-2007Media Type: DVD The Girls Next Door: Season Two offers 16 more episodes of Holly, Bridget, and Kendra's pranks and party planning as Hef's main girls at the Playboy Mansion. Just like with Season One, watching Season Two is like eating junk food, so sensational and silly are the three ladies commenting on their glamorous day-to-day activities. Though the novelty of the show has worn off, more appearances by Hugh Hefner and a gained understanding of the trio's dynamics--equally friendly and competitive--helps the show transcend utter banality. In fact, the show feels more like Dynasty, now an intricate combination of reality television and soap opera. More shown aggravations amongst the ladies, and more glimpses of Hef's love for this unfolding drama in his own home, make the show a fine example of American sensationalism. Two episodes are dedicated to Hef's 80th birthday extravangaza, making it the most significant story in the second season. Wonderful footage of previous Hefner birthdays and previous playmates frolicking nearly nude adds heft to Playboy's historical significance. It's astonishing to think that this icon has enjoyed such a lifestyle for half a decade, and truly amazing to see Hefner now, on television, touring Europe in "I See London, I See France," dancing in nightclubs, or hosting a slumber party in "Sleepwear Optional." The girls, too, have seemingly settled into their careers when prepping to host their own exercise shows in "Mutiny On the Booty," during which Kendra, the biggest ditz of the three, shines with her martial arts demonstrations. As tempting as it is to choose favorites among the ladies in Season Two, one begins to realize that it's their metaphorical ménage-a-trois that keeps the show sexy, and that's what it's all about. —Trinie Dalton

Emmy-award nominated Cesar Millan has an uncanny ability to rehabilitate problem dogs of all shapes and sizes. With the major success of his hit show on National Geographic Channel and DVD, Cesar has captured the national spotlight as America's favorite dog expert. Each episode of the Dog Whisperer documents the remarkable transformation that takes place under Cesar's guidance by teaching and helping dogs and their owners achieve happier lives together. 6 Discs. In the second season of The Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan shows his breadth of abilities of working with all kinds of problem pooches, gently asserting his dominance over the dogs and gaining their trust. For example, pity poor Booker. The handsome Hungarian Vizsla was born in a quiet pocket of rural Southern California, and ever since moving to bustling downtown Long Beach with his doting owner has been terrified of, well, pretty much everything. On his daily walks, Booker cowers, lurks, bolts, and otherwise is utterly miserable at the sight of baby strollers, rollerbladers, a random garbage can that wasn't there yesterday. Enter Millan, who's able to coax Booker out of his paralyzing fear--in part by physically holding his tail out from between his legs. This position "makes him feel pride," Millan says, and sure enough, Booker begins to hold his head up, too, and act calmer. In some cases the transformations are nothing short of incredible. Buddy ("the Biter"), a Papillon-corgi mix, is a sweet, loving dog one minute, and a savage biting machine the next. After seeing how Buddy treats his owners, you wouldn't want to get into the same room with him, yet Millan gently approaches the dog and sits on the floor next to him, inching closer until he's touching a very mellow-looking Buddy. "Walk with a dog who's in a traumatic state," Millan advises, "and then when they calm down, show the love." And not a minute before. The boxed set includes five discs of the season's episodes, and extras including three new unseen stories, Millan's essential tips for dog ...

The most memorable character from Flavor of Love is leaving the spitfests, catfights and heartbreaks behind. New York is moving on and still looking for love. But this time, she's standing on the other side of the clock, 'cause VH1 and the producers of Flavor of Love have given the sassy siren her own show, her own mansion and 20 guys to choose from. But she's not going it alone. New York and her mom, Sister Patterson, put these men through the paces - testing them on everything from physical prowess, to "daddying" skills, to earning potential and more. In the end, the man with the most love for New York could just walk away with her heart. No one loves New York as much as Tiffany Pollard, the trash-talking Flavor of Love contestant who made for such good TV that she not only appeared on two seasons of that reality dating show, but also won her own VH1 series--I Love New York. Nicknamed "New York" by Flavor Flav--the would-be Lothario who had a difficult time remembering the female contestants' actual first names--Pollard sticks with that sassy moniker as she plays the starring role and selects from 20 men who are vying for her attention and love. The fact that Season Two of the series premiered on VH1 in October 2007 (shortly after the release of this DVD set) proves that love has been short-lived and elusive for New York. But really--when have these dating shows ever been more about love than getting your 15 minutes of fame--or infamy? I Love New York is as trashy as the role Pollard plays. Unlike ABC's The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, which at least goes through the motions of picking suitable contenders, VH1 has stacked the deck against New York (and, let's face it, the men). Their nicknames (Token, Trendz, White Boy) are more interesting than they are. And while New York proclaims to be shocked that some of them are on the show for other reasons than to win her over, the audience isn't. Of course these wannabe actors-models-singers are hoping the series is their springboard to fame. Why would anyone want N...

It s one of the most perilous roads in the world, a strip of ice built on frozen lakes that connects remote billion-dollar mining outposts in northern Canada with civilization 350 miles away. In the brief two months a year that the road is passable, ten thousand loads, some weighing as much as twenty-two tons, will travel over the highway in an urgent race to provide critical supplies to the camps before the ice melts.ICE ROAD TRUCKERS follows the competition and camaraderie of six truckers over a season on the ice road, as they brave white-outs, thin ice, and the deadly cold to perform one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. From the construction of this massive frozen highway and the preparation of the truck fleet, to the risky final days when the melting highway grows dangerously unreliable, THE HISTORY CHANNEL takes viewers on a thrilling, adrenaline-pumping ride.DVD Features: Ice Road Truckers episode of Dangerous Missions; 5 Featurettes: Meet the Truckers , Overcoming the Challenges , Perils of the Ice Road , Behind-The-Scenes , The Countdown Wages of Fear has nothing on Ice Road Truckers. Transporting unstable nitroglycerine is Driving Miss Daisy compared to the sanity and death-defying challenges facing these drivers who face great rewards but even greater dangers. Where these guys are going, there are no roads, except for about two months when the lakes freeze solid enough to allow the transport of literally tons of essential supplies to Canada's remote diamond mines as far as 350 miles away near the Arctic Circle. The goal is to deliver 10,000 loads in 60 days. The truckers call it the "dash for the cash." Fasten your seatbelts; it's going to be a bumpy ride. Ice Road Truckers is one of the most harrowing of the "dirty jobs" sub-genre of reality TV. This History Channel series mines a little extra drama by playing up the competition between the drivers to see who can make the most runs. The series' most compelling personality is Hugh, a 21-season veteran known as "the Polar Bear," who suffers what ...
