President John F. Kennedy kept a unique inauguration gift on his White House desk: a coconut encased in plastic. The tale of that coconut is the heroic story of PT 109. Academy Award winner* Cliff Robertson stars in this stirring saga of Kennedy's wartime exploits as skipper of a PT boat in the Solomon Islands. The assignment: harass the enemy and buy time for a U.S. Navy still on the drawing boards. In August 1943, PT 109 was sliced in half by a Japanese destroyer. Kennedy led his surviving crew through a sea aflame from gasoline, towing a badly burned sailor miles to the nearest island. There seemed little hope of rescue from the Japanese-dominated area...until a strategy involving a coconut emerged. The triumphant outcome was unbelievable - and all true!

Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers (DVD)The epic adventure of Babylon 5 enters a new age for humankind... The wars have ended, and an unprecedented era of exploration is at hand. Under the guidance of the Interstellar Alliance, the Rangers, an elite military group of humans and aliens, enforces peace and rebuilds civilization. But these young heroes may have met their match when they encounter a previously unknown alien race more powerful--and more lethal--than any encountered before.]]> Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers is a two-hour television movie created by J. Michael Straczynski (original creator of the Babylon 5 series) for the Sci-Fi Channel. The telefilm takes place in 2264 after the wars are over and a new age of space exploration has begun. Science-fiction fans are notoriously hard to please, and few have anything good to say about The Legend of the Rangers, produced in 2002 to introduce a spinoff of the popular Babylon 5 TV series. The naysayers have a point. Few elements of this 90-minute pilot, subtitled "To Live and Die in Starlight," will likely be memorialized among the genre's golden moments; the dialogue is often clunky and on-the-nose, the acting is less than stellar, and the effects work, while pretty good, doesn't live up to the standard set by Stargate, Farscape, and others. Nevertheless, there's a reasonably compelling story here, involving the elite Rangers (made up of humans and aliens alike, including the Minbari, who sport "head bones" instead...

Ron Howard, Cindy Williams, Charles Martin Smith and Paul Le Mat return in this laugh-filled follow-up look into the lives of the gang from George Lucas' original coming-of-age classic, American Graffiti. Set a few years later, the film traces the continuing hopes, dreams and romances of these high school friends. Gone are the sock hops, cruise nights and make-out spots. Now it's all about campus parties, love-ins and peace rallies - as these friends find themselves in the midst of the amazing era that was the mid-60s. Featuring a timeless soundtrack loaded with the period's greatest hits by Bob Dylan, Donovan, Simon and Garfunkel, The Byrds, The Doors and more, it's a story sure to evoke memories of a time when becoming an adult meant laughing, crying and savoring old friendships. Six years after American Graffiti, George Lucas answered the call for an update on his classic characters with this ambitious sequel. You definitely need to know the original to have an emotional investment in More American Graffiti, as the action is spread over four different New Year's Eves in the sixties. Milner is drag racing, the Toad is dodging bullets in Vietnam, Debbie is a San Francisco hippie, and Steve and Laurie weather a domestic crisis. The cast is back, save for the AWOL Richard Dreyfuss; even Harrison Ford pops up for an amusing cameo. The busy rock soundtrack is there too, but the old magic is dissipated in labored comedy and obvious social comment. The most interesting thing abo...
