One of the first things that rookie cops all over the country are told is that there's no such thing as black or white on the police force. There's only blue, or whatever color uniform that particular force wears. Cops have to be able to trust one another, believe that their partners will back them up in a tough spot regardless of race. But what it sometimes means is that black cops are supposed to turn the other way when white cops are roughing up a black suspect. You don't hear very often of white cops looking the other way while black cops are roughing up white suspects. Every once in a while a cop will stand up and say no, right is right and wrong is wrong and just because it's a policeman engaging in wrong behavior, that's no reason to look the other way.
