High Lonesome - The Story of Bluegrass Music
Manufacturer: Shanchie Records Brand: Documentary - Dokumentation Model: 2256643
This 95 minute DVD feature film traces the evolution, from folk roots in the Kentucky hills through innovations which shaped modern forms. Over 100 songs by Bill Monroe, Stanle y Brothers, Mac Wiseman, Jimmy Martin, Flatt & Scruggs, Osb ourne Brothers, "The story of bluegrass is the story of Bill Monroe's musical legacy." So begins this superb 1991 documentary, which frames its historical survey around Monroe, the father of Kentucky bluegrass. As Monroe visits his old Kentucky home, now dilapidated and full of memories, the film traces the emergence of bluegrass from Appalachian descendants of Scotch-Irish settlers, and a variety of bluegrass greats (including narrator Mac Wiseman) offer informative anecdotes, accompanied by evocative archival footage and concert performances from the bluegrass festival circuit. Monroe's dominance is duly acknowledged, but ample time is devoted to his contemporaries and successors, including the fast-pickin' duo of Flat & Scruggs, the Osborne Brothers, Jimmy Martin, and finally Alison Krauss, who passionately defends the music's acoustic purity. The rise, fall, and consistent revival of bluegrass is thus chronicled through oral history and visual record, resulting in a priceless film that even casual fans are sure to enjoy. --Jeff Shannon
A Little Night Music
Manufacturer: Henstooth Video Brand: Henstooth Video
An actress, her married ex-lover, her current lover's wife and other guests gather at a circa-1900 estate. There are many enjoyable elements in the 1978 film version of Stephen Sondheim's exquisite chamber musical A Little Night Music, based on Ingmar Bergman's film Smiles of a Summer Night. First, Sondheim's score (all based on meters of 3) is full of riches such as "Now/Later/Soon," "Every Day a Little Death," "It Would Have Been Wonderful," and the famous "Send in the Clowns." There's even one reworking, of "The Glamorous Life," that became something of a collector's item for fans. Second, much of the cast is good, with original Broadway lead Len Cariou reprising his role as Frederik, the lawyer torn between his young wife, Anne (Lesley Anne-Down), and his former beau Desiree (Elizabeth Taylor). Others from the original Broadway company are Laurence Guittard (as pompous soldier Carl-Magnus) and Hermione Gingold (Mme. Armfeldt), and Diana Rigg adds a wonderful spice. Unfortunately Hal Prince couldn't translate his successful stage direction to this clunky film, Taylor's marquee value couldn't help her sing her big number, "Send in the Clowns," and a number of decisions--cutting songs, moving the setting from Sweden to Austria, eliminating the Greek chorus--just didn't work. It's worth seeing for the cast and for Sondheim's music, but all in all, A Little Night Music is one of the most dismal Broadway-to-movie adaptations ever made. --David Horiuchi On the DVD The 2007...

George Gershwin - Porgy & Bess / Trevor Nunn · Sir Simon Rattle · W. White · C. Haymon · Glyndebourne Opera
Manufacturer: Warner Classics Brand: RATTLE,SIMON/+
The Gershwins' musical masterpiece Porgy and Bess is one of America's greatest works. This production was adapted for the screen by Trevor Nunn and Yves Baigneres. It was directed by Trevor Nunn and is based on the highly successful staging of the original Glyndebourne Festival Opera production in 1986-87, which was remounted at Covent Garden in the autumn of 1992 with most of the original cast. Immediately after that performance the production was moved to the giant stage at Shepperton Studios, with much expanded sets and lighting. It was then recorded using EMI's original award-winning soundtrack. First performed in 1935 and based on the play Porgy by DuBose and Dorothy K. Heyward, Porgy and Bess has achieved worldwide renown through such memorable songs as "Summertime," "It Ain't Necessarily So," "I Got Plenty o' Nuttin'," "Oh Lawd, I'm on My Way," and many more, set to Gershwin's moving symphonic score. 184 minutes. Porgy: Willard White Bess: Cynthia Haymon Crown: Gregg Baker Serena: Cynthia Clarey Maria: Mariette Simpson Sporting Life: Damon Evans Clara: Paula Ingram (sung by Harolyn Blackwell) Jake: Gordon Hawkins (sung by Bruce Hubbard) Mingo: Barrington Coleman Robbins: D. Alonzo Washington (sung by Johnny Worthy) This powerful production originated on the stage of the Glyndebourne Festival. It was restaged and filmed on location for the BBC telecast preserved in this video recording. Director Trevor Nunn takes full advantage of the realism, fluidity of movement, a...

Shania Twain - The Platinum Collection
Manufacturer: Mercury Nashville Brand: Mercury Music
Includes the videos for What Made You Say That, Dance with the One That Brought You, You Lay a Whole Lot of Love on Me, Whose Beds Have Your Boots Been Under?, Any Man of Mine, The Woman in Me (Needs the Man in You), (If You're Not in It for Love) I'm Outta Here!, You Win My Love, No One Needs to Know, Home Ain't Where His Heart Is (Anymore), God Bless the Child, Love Gets Me Every Time, Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You), You're Still the One, Honey I'm Home, From This Moment On, That Don't Impress Me Much, Man! I Feel Like a Woman!, You've Got a Way, Come On Over, Rock This Country! 80 minutes. Nothing encourages one to ignore those silly contradictions in Shania Twain's music (is she country? is she pop?) like a collection of her highly playful videos. The Platinum Collection rolls right over boundaries of tradition and genre with its concentration of imaginative, often surprising visuals. "The Woman in Me," for instance, is set among Egypt's pyramids, while "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" finds a stunning Twain fronting a band of mindless hunks in a funny reversal of Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" video. "You're Still the One," easily one of Twain's most affecting songs, still holds up as a softly erotic short film. Even Twain's more prosaic videos (the go-kart mania of "You Win My Love") bear repeat viewing, but it's her heck-with-it aesthetic that leads to such unexpected sights as Irish step dancing in "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)." Then, of course, there ...
