James Taylor Live at the Beacon Theatre
Manufacturer: Sony Legacy Brand: TAYLOR,JAMES Model: 2230633
TAYLOR AND HIS BAND ARE FILMED IN CONCERT AT BOSTON'S BEACON THEATRE, PERFORMING CLASSICS AND SONGS FROM THE HOURGLASS ALBUM. Sensitive singer-songwriter, soft-rock poster boy, boomer troubadour: James Taylor has outlived the stereotypes offered by fans and critics alike by simply staying his musical course and continuing to refine his familiar, deceptively mellifluous style. This 1998 concert displays Taylor's craftsmanship and easy rapport with both his band and his audience to satisfying effect, offering a repertoire that draws from his entire career while providing a generous selection of songs from his Grammy-winning 1997 set, Hourglass. Fans will love it, of course, but even jaded listeners can find fresh feeling and formidable expertise here. By now, Taylor's skill at low-key love songs is a given, making him an archetypal "sensitive New Age guy" on the strength of his canny mix of emotional vulnerability, romantic imagery, and understated delivery. Less obviously, Taylor has gradually transformed the shadows of disillusionment audible in his earliest songs into a nuanced acknowledgment of his own age. "Line 'Em Up," from Hourglass, typifies his skill at limning disarmingly lucid, frankly philosophical vignettes, here woven around a recollection of Richard Nixon's last hurrah, while "Jump Up Behind Me" affords a testament to self-determination ultimately as serious in theme as it is buoyant in its musical framework. Britney Spears - Live from Las Vegas
Manufacturer: Sony Legacy Model: 2210066
Millions of fans around the world. Las Vegas. Britney. It was a night to remember when the reigning queen of pop gave a house-shaking performance to a sold-out Vegas crowd with countless fans watching the action unfold live on HBO. Includes Oops! I Did it Again; Crazy; Lucky; Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know; I'm a Slave 4 U; Baby One More Time , and more. 2001/color/90 min/NR/fullscreen. With a November 2001 Las Vegas performance that became an HBO special, Britney Spears headlines a visual spectacle that surpasses even Vegas's stage shows. From the opening "Oops! I Did It Again" to the closing "I'm a Slave 4 U," Spears and her dance troupe athletically romp through a live, life-size, 90-minute music video. There's no musical emphasis (usually the original recordings play while Spears nominally pays attention to what she's supposed to be singing), but that's not the point. Soft-spoken offstage, Spears becomes someone else entirely in front of an audience: numerous costume changes, a plethora of filmed footage, awesome acrobatics, and a gigantic stage set create the ultimate triumph of visuals over music. During the encore, "Baby One More Time," rain drenches Spears, giving a born entertainer one final opportunity to leave her fans awestruck. The concert was broadcast live to four military bases, and Spears acknowledges the soldiers' service in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks. --Kevin Filipski

The Moody Blues - A Night at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra
Manufacturer: Polydor / Umgd Model: 2228105
Conducted by Larry Baird, experience the melodic spell of The Moody Blues backed by a full symphony orchestra with legendary performances of "Tuesday Afternoon," "Lovely to see You," and "Ride My See Saw." Includes 20 tracks in all in a truly outstanding A Night at Red Rocks, taped in Colorado's gorgeous natural amphitheater in 1992, is an ambitious undertaking for these still-stomping rock dinosaurs: the classic Moody Blues lineup playing with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and no safety net. The band rises to the occasion, giving fans a solid if sentimental survey of its long and prosperous career. The performances and the material vary in quality, but the group comes through where it counts. Hits like "The Voice," "The Story in Your Eyes," and "Nights in White Satin" sound great, as does "Question," the Moodys' greatest contribution to rock music. The Symphony plays well, but the group misses some prime opportunities to use it, adhering to synth parts where an orchestra would have worked nicely (most notably in the rocking "Gemini Dream"). There's no surround mix here, but band leaders Justin Haywood and John Lodge deserve kudos for their able sound mixing. --Michael Mikesell
