Garden of Words [Blu-ray]
Manufacturer: Section23 Films Brand: Section23 Films Model: 26923356
When Takao, a young high school student who dreams of becoming a shoe designer, decides to skip school one day in favor of sketching in a rainy garden, he has no idea how much his life will change when he encounters Yukino. Older, but perhaps not as much wiser, she seems adrift in the world. Despite the difference in their ages, they strike up an unusual relationship that unexpectedly continues and evolves, without planning, with random meetings that always occur in the same garden on each rainy day. But the rainy season is coming to a close, and there are so many things still left unsaid and undone between them. Will there be time left for Takao to put his feelings into actions and words? Between the raindrops, between the calms in the storm, what will blossom in THE GARDEN OF WORDS? Like many 15-year-olds, Takao Akizuki, the hero of director-screenwriter Makoto Shinkai's featurette The Garden of Words (2013), feels trapped in high school. On rainy days, he cuts his morning classes to sit in a park modeled on Shinjuku Gyoen in Tokyo. Sheltered in a pavilion, he draws and dreams of becoming a designer/shoemaker. One morning he meets an "older woman," 27-year-old Ms. Yukino, who seems as lost and directionless as he is. A curious friendship develops between the two misfits. At 44 minutes, The Garden of Words suggests the anime equivalent of a short story. In his earlier, longer films--Voices of a Distant Star (2003), The Place Promised in Our Early Days (2004), Children Who Ch...

Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1957 Television Production)
Manufacturer: Image Entertainment Brand: Image Entertainment Model: 014381212723
THE CLASSIC FAIRY TALE WITH A RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN SCORE. The DVD era has unearthed another treasure. For the first time ever, Julie Andrews's performance in the title role of the original 1957 television production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella is available to the public on home video. Cinderella was created as a Broadway-style television production with an original score from the creators of Oklahoma! and Carousel, featuring such songs as "In My Own Little Corner," "Impossible," "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful," and "Stepsisters' Lament." Cast in the title role was the 21-year-old Andrews, at the time starring on Broadway in My Fair Lady (another Cinderella story of sorts), and the cast was filled out by a talented bunch of stage veterans (including Kaye Ballard, Edie Adams, Dorothy Stickney, and Stickney's husband, writer Howard Lindsay). On March 31, 1957, a then-record 120 million homes saw the program as it was broadcast, live and in color, but it was preserved only in black-and-white kinescope, i.e., by aiming a camera at a monitor during the broadcast. While this version probably looks better than we have any right to expect, the picture is still fuzzy black-and-white, which makes it a tougher sell for kids than the later color versions, 1965 with Lesley Anne Warren and the 1997 Disneyized version. But give older kids (say, 8 or so) credit for being able to look past the black-and-white picture and primitive effects and enjoy the charming song...
