Tyler Perry's What's Done in the Dark... - The Play Collection
Manufacturer: Lions Gate Brand: Lionsgate Model: 4986936
Get ready to laugh and sing out loud. WHAT'S DONE IN THE DARK, set in a hospital emergency room, follows several nurses, their doctors, and some very interesting patients (hello, Mr. Brown!). What seems routine rarely is. Some folks would do well to remember: what's done in the dark always come to light. Tyler Perry mixes melodrama, social commentary, slapstick comedy, gospel music, and public health announcements in What's Done in the Dark... The lives of nurses, doctors, and patients of a city hospital get turned upside-down: A nurse discovers the doctor she's fooling around with is married; a faithful husband is diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease; the son of a nurse abandoned by her husband seeks desperate means to make money; and audience favorite Mr. Brown (David Mann), who's appeared in other Perry plays, comes to the hospital convinced that he's dying, dragging his long-suffering daughter Cora (Tamela Mann) along with him. What's Done in the Dark... is a production of a play, filmed before a live audience, so it doesn't have the visual dynamics of a movie, but the full-tilt, show-stopping gospel songs wouldn't have the same unbridled exuberance anywhere but on the stage. Perry's writing is rarely subtle, but What's Done in the Dark... is broader than usual--even longtime fans may find the cartoonish Nurse Trudy (D'Atra Hicks) a bit hard to take. Nonetheless, the play continues Perry's devotion to themes of love, respect, and the grace of God, as well as prov...

The Rolling Stones - Rock and Roll Circus
Manufacturer: Abkco Films Brand: UNI DIST CORP (MUSIC) Model: 634 590-3
Filmmaker Michael Lindsay-Hogg's concert film features the Rolling Stones, the Who, Jethro Tull, John Lennon and Eric Clapton. Unavailable at all for nearly three decades, then issued in a VHS edition in 1996, the Rolling Stones' legendary Rock and Roll Circus finally gets the full treatment with this DVD release documenting the 1968 event. The Stones were reportedly unhappy with their performance (hence the long delay), and it isn't their finest moment; performing "Jumping Jack Flash" and a variety of songs from their then-new Beggars Banquet album, Keith Richards is game, but Jagger's preening (especially on "Sympathy for the Devil") is over the top, and guitarist Brian Jones looks dissolute and well on his way to his death the following year. A certain weirdness permeates some of the other musical acts as well: Jethro Tull lip-syncs unconvincingly, Taj Mahal and band were obliged to perform before the circus set was completed and the audience had arrived, and John Lennon's outing with impromptu supergroup the Dirty Mac (with Richards, Eric Clapton, and drummer Mitch Mitchell) is hampered by Yoko Ono's caterwauling, although their version of the Beatles' "Yer Blues" is cool. Still, the Who are brilliant, Marianne Faithfull is beautiful, the various circus acts are fun, and the crowd clearly loves it. The DVD comes with some fascinating bonus features, including three extra songs by Mahal, some lovely classical piano by Julius Katchen, and a "quad split-screen" version of ...
Laugh To Keep From Crying [DVD]
Manufacturer: Lions Gate Brand: Lions Gate Model: 17355753
Step into Tyler Perry’s neighborhood, peel back the rough exterior and BEHOLD! Get on the laugh wagon as some of your favorite stage stars strut, sing and remind us, no matter how tough it gets, that laughter, faith and love are the best remedies. The Tyler Perry entertainment machine keeps cranking across entertainment markets with this home-video entry of one of his many stage plays, Laugh to Keep from Crying. It was taped during a live performance in Perry's hometown of Atlanta before the show went on a healthy, extended national tour starting in the fall of 2009. Perry wrote and directed the production and his fans will find a lot to like in the mix of sitcom gags, down-home moralism, old-fashioned melodrama, and rousing gospel- and soul-based music (cowritten by Perry and Elvin Ross). The only thing they'll miss is the performing presence of Perry himself since Laugh does not feature the character of Madea, his big-bosomed, gun-toting, potty-mouthed granny of an alter ego. Laugh takes place round about a tenement apartment on an unnamed urban street where gunshots are frequent and the primarily African-American tenants are struggling to get by as they also struggle with a variety of life issues. The building is home to Carol (Cheryl Pepsii Riley), a single mom with two teenagers who have different fathers and wholly different attitudes. There's Tony (Donny Sykes), a momma's boy who's dedicated to school, church, and singing in the choir, and Lisa (Tamar Davis), a ...
