The Moody Blues - A Night at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra
Manufacturer: Polydor / Umgd
Conducted by Larry Baird, experience the melodic spell of The Moody Blues backed by a full symphony orchestra with legendary performances of "Tuesday Afternoon," "Lovely to see You," and "Ride My See Saw." Includes 20 tracks in all in a truly outstanding A Night at Red Rocks, taped in Colorado's gorgeous natural amphitheater in 1992, is an ambitious undertaking for these still-stomping rock dinosaurs: the classic Moody Blues lineup playing with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and no safety net. The band rises to the occasion, giving fans a solid if sentimental survey of its long and prosperous career. The performances and the material vary in quality, but the group comes through where it counts. Hits like "The Voice," "The Story in Your Eyes," and "Nights in White Satin" sound great, as does "Question," the Moodys' greatest contribution to rock music. The Symphony plays well, but the group misses some prime opportunities to use it, adhering to synth parts where an orchestra would have worked nicely (most notably in the rocking "Gemini Dream"). There's no surround mix here, but band leaders Justin Haywood and John Lodge deserve kudos for their able sound mixing. --Michael Mikesell
Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band - Live in New York City
Manufacturer: Sony Legacy
Brand: Alfred Music
The triumphant, sold-out set of ten shows at Madison Square Garden from which "Live in New York City" is culled marked Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's first series of Garden concerts since 1988's "Tunnel of Love Express" tour. There's only one better way to experience these performances by Bruce Springsteen and his reunited E Street Band, and that's if you were actually in Madison Square Garden when they were recorded in June and July 2000. This two-disc set includes more than three hours of music. Disc One features the 14 songs that were aired by HBO in 2001, while Disc Two adds another 11 tunes released here for the first time. The Boss and his band are in top form; their sheer exuberance at playing together, not to mention the joy and inspiration they provide their audience, are palpable, thanks in no small part to the excellent direction and superb sound (Dolby Digital 5.1 or PCM stereo). Highlights? Almost everything, from timeless anthems like "Born to Run" and "Thunder Road" to the riveting "American Skin (41 Shots)" and a bluesy, solo "Born in the U.S.A." All together now: Bruuuuuuce! --Sam Graham
