Abba Gold - Greatest Hits
Manufacturer: Polydor / Umgd
Brand: UNIVERSAL MUSIC VIDEO DIST.
Abba ~ Abba Gold - Greatest Hits For those who love Abba (and if you're reading this, chances are you do, even if you don't know it yet), ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits represents a happy, joyous compilation of 19 of the Swedish supergroup's numerous videos (it omits 13 that were on Abba: The Definitive Collection but adds "Lay All Your Love on Me" and "I Have a Dream"). Granted, they all seem to have been filmed on the same soundstage (even the firelit "Fernando"), but they retain their appeal and infectious charm. Fans can thrill to these vintage clips, which provide an opportunity to rediscover who was the most natural in front of the camera (Agnetha), who was the best dancer (Anna-Frid, a.k.a. Frida), who was the most demure (Benny), and who was the worst lip-syncher (Bjorn--always Bjorn). Lassé Hallstrom, later an Oscar®-nominated filmmaker, directed most of the early videos, and it shows in their natural, no-fuss style; it wasn't until Abba tried to make the jump to '80s-style electronica that they faltered in both style and content. In addition to old standbys like "Waterloo" and "Take a Chance on Me," there's a 25-minute historical documentary and a 1992 version of the "Dancing Queen" video. To this we say: Thank you for the music--and the videos! --Mark Englehart
Frank Zappa - Baby Snakes
Manufacturer: Eagle Eye Media / Eagle Rock Entertainment
Model: 2263531
Frank Zappa's highly acclaimed film from 1979 includes over three hours of outrageous Zappa musical performances and unique & bizarre Claymation from Bruce Bickford. This is the full-length version of the film as it premiered at the Victoria Theatre in T Touted as "a movie about people who do stuff that is not normal," Frank Zappa's Baby Snakes chronicles a late-'70s Halloween stand in New York City (a zany enough proceeding in its own right) with digressions throughout the first half for backstage antics, band interviews, and some outlandish clay animation from Bruce Bickford, with whose work Zappa was obviously smitten. Onstage, Zappa is a live wire, the audience is appropriately rambunctious, and the band--an especially potent incarnation of the famous Mothers of Invention--is tight as could be. The film amounts to a three-hour musical carnival whose participants lack any trace of artistic or personal inhibition. Zappa, who died in 1993, always worked with consummate musicians, and Baby Snakes showcases the cream of the crop: Terry Bozzio (one of the greatest drummers ever to command a kit), bassist Patrick O'Hearn, keyboard wizard Tommy Mars, and even pop chameleon Adrian Belew. The DVD packaging, with its deluxe miniature dossier on Zappa and the film, is fabulous, and the sound and picture seem about as good as they could be, under the influence--that is, the circumstances. Undeniable are Zappa's intelligence and charisma, which flicker and blaze eve...

The Beatles - The First U.S. Visit

Triumph - A Night of Triumph Live
Manufacturer: Tml Entertainment
Model: 2250492
Triumph, capture live at their electrifying best during their final and most spectacular tour in 1987. The original audio tracks have been remixed in Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 Surround Sound, redefining the DVD concert experience. Also includes two bonu The Canadian power trio Triumph may have faded from the memories of disparaging critics, but A Night of Triumph Live offers ample proof that this underrated band could rock as well as any of their longer-lasting contemporaries. A sold-out crowd of 10,000 loyal fans already knew that when this exceptionally well-recorded concert was videotaped at the Metro Centre Arena in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on January 16, 1987. Twelve years into its history, six years after the breakthrough success of its Allied Forces LP, and just a year before breaking up, the band (lead guitarist/vocalist Rik Emmett, drummer/vocalist Gil Moore, and bassist/keyboardist Mike Levine, with guest bandmate Rick Santer providing backup keyboards and vocals) was heavily touring to support their 1986 release The Sport of Kings, and they're in peak form with a dazzling pyrotechnical stage show that readily matches their versatile musicianship. The sheer megawattage of their stage lighting is quintessential '80s excess (or what Moore referred to as NGF, or "Net Gasp Factor"), but it never overpowers the music itself. Even casual fans will agree that the radio hit "Magic Power" has enduring appeal; if you were a teenage fan during Triumph's prime in the mid-'80s, t...

Wattstax (30th Anniversary Special Edition)
Manufacturer: WarnerBrothers
Brand: HAYES,ISAAC
Model: 2232692
Wattstax: Special Edition, The (DVD)On August 20, 1972, more than 100,000 people attended what came to be known as "The Black Woodstock." Wattstax - The Special Edition is the 30th anniversary release of the film that documented that historic event and includes the once-lost original ending featuring Isaac Hayes' performances of "Theme From Shaft" and "Soulsville."]]> They called Wattstax the "black Woodstock," but there are many differences between that seminal hippie event and the 1972 concert documented in this 30th-anniversary special-edition reissue. Woodstock was all about peace, love, and music. Wattstax, held three years later in Los Angeles, had those elements as well; but as this 103-minute film reminds us, it was a more socio-politically charged event, with its emphasis on black pride and the simple opportunity for African Americans to assert that, in opening speaker Jesse Jackson's words, "I am somebody." There's also a good deal less music in this film than in the Woodstock movie. As the title suggests, a host of great Stax Records artists (including Rufus and Carla Thomas, the Bar-Kays, the Staple Singers, Albert King, and show closer Isaac Hayes) performed, but much of Wattstax doesn't even take place inside the L.A. Coliseum, where the concert was held, but rather in the churches and shops and on the streets of Watts itself (music fans would be better off checking out the Wattstax double CD). Wattstax, in fact, is much less a music movie than a chronicle of b...
