This report features a remarkable AIDS patient, Nkosi Johnson, a little boy you won't soon forget. In June 2001 correspondent Jim Wooten reported the obituary of an AIDS patient, a young twelve-year-old boy in South Africa who was born HIV-positive and outlived the prediction of his doctors by years. It was a traffic accident in Buffalo, New York. Cynthia Wiggins, a young black woman, was hit by a truck as she tried to cross a busy highway on her way to a suburban mall. She never regained consciousness and died from her injuries, leaving an infant son behind.But, as Ted Koppel pointed out when he first reported this story, why she died and why she was on that highway to begin with divided the community along racial lines. The black community labeled the incident racist because the upscale mall had banned inner-city busses.The case wound up in court, as many accidents do. Some in the community feared that the trial would be divisive, others worried that the racial issues were never fully recognized in the first place.
