The hip series Project Runway is a pop culture sensation. International supermodel Heidi Klum returns as host, heading a glamorous panel of celebrities and fashion icons in search of the next star fashion designer. The third season of Bravo's reality hit boasted the most evenly matched upper roster of aspiring designers thus far in the series, and maintained the show's reign as one of the best in reality television (it's been nominated for an Emmy every year). It also featured not just one clichéd villain, but several: Keith, the impossibly arrogant menswear designer who believed he was "above" all challenges (and refusing to design the dog outfit mandated as part of that challenge); Jeffrey, the tattooed rock-star designer who was as condescending as he was innovative (yet, because of his bluntness, successful sobriety and impossibly cute son, you couldn't help but like the guy a little); and Vincent, the slightly perverse '80s-era designer who famously cashed out his 401(k) to try the business again and whom always seems two sandwiches short of a picnic. The season's challenges included making a dress out of materials from the contestants' apartments, modernizing the look of a fashion icon (from Audrey Hepburn to Madonna), and designing an evening gown for Miss USA (the later fallen Tara Conner) to wear in the Miss Universe pageant. Later in the season, the remaining finalists were able to jet off to Paris to be judged by designer Catherine Malandrino, whose criticisms were actually harsher than host Heidi Klum's ("You look rideeeculous," she tells one. "You look like a fehk pop stahr." ). Other guest judges during the season included Vera Wang, Kate Spade, Ivanka Trump, and Richard Tyler. Project Runway stands out from many other reality shows in that talent was actually a requisite and there was no audience voting to keep undeserving contestants in. The complete first season of the TV series Flavor of Love. At their peak in the late-1980s, who could've predicted that Public Enemy's hype man would become one of reality TV's biggest stars? For William Drayton Jr., AKA Flavor Flav, the journey began with VH1's The Surreal Life 3, which spawned Strange Love (co-starring the inimitable Brigitte Nielsen), culminating in Flavor of Love, a down and dirty version of ABC's soft-focus Bachelor. Instead of a tall, bland hunk, the prize is a diminutive 46-year-old with a unique vocabulary ("Yeah, Boyeee!"), an unusual dress sense (Viking helmets, sci-fi sunglasses, wall clock necklaces), and his own "Body Man," Big Rick. Over the course of this 10-part series, 20 women compete to become Flav's lady love. Seeing as the show is made for cable--and that this is the unrated edition--that means risqué language and revealing outfits are fair game (there's even a little Girls Gone Wild nudity from a few Flavorettes). Because Flav isn't good with names, he doles out some easy-to-remember handles. There's the moody Rain, sensitive Smiley, catty New York, etc. In each episode (except for the recap), he eliminates one to five contestants. Those left standing "know what time it is." Challenges include hot tub-speed dating, a fried chicken cook-off, and Vegas-style roulette. A cross between Jerry Springer and a rap video, the "celebreality" extravaganza is an explosion of hair extensions and false eyelashes set to a soundtrack of screaming and crying. Nonetheless, Flavor of Love pulled in the punters--the finale was the highest rated program in the network's history--and was renewed for a second go-round, indicating that America was "feeling" the Flav...and that the winner split the crib. This compilation comprises 22 tracks including key performances from Marty Casey, Jordis Unga, Mig Ayesa, Suzie McNeil, Ty Taylor and winner J.D. Fortune. Moreover, it includes live cuts from INXS in the shape of 'Need You Tonight', 'Never Tear Us Apart', 'Suicide Blonde', 'Pretty Vegas' and 'Don't Change' - some of which are from the off-camera performance following the selection of JD. Additional extras on the DVD include contestants audition tapes, an introduction to the DVD from JD, and outtakes from the show. For music fans who found American Idol heavy on the syrupy ballads, Rock Star: INXS added volume to a similar premise--even if the goal was to become the new lead singer of INXS. (At the very least, there are more tattoos.) That said, this DVD doesn't include episodes from the program, but rather performances, each preceded by an explanation from the performer as to the reason they chose that particular song. Although the show featured 15 contestants, this disc concentrates on the six finalists: Jordis, Suzie, Marty, Ty, Mig, and J.D. The other nine can be glimpsed in "Behind the Scenes," in which they get made up, warm-up backstage, etc. The music section begin with J.D.'s quasi-metallic "California Dreamin'" (the Mamas and the Papas) and ends with Suzie's ambitious "Bohemian Rhapsody" (for the most part, she pulls off the operatic Queen opus). Ironically, the strongest performances are two of the least bombastic: Marty's solo acoustic "Mr. Brightside" (the Killers) and Jordis's "The Man Who Sold the World" (David Bowie by way of Nirvana; she also covered "Heart Shaped Box"). The DVD includes Rock Star winner J.D. Fortune's first live set with INXS--five songs in which he sounds a lot like the late Michael Hutchence. (Sensitive viewers should be advised that "Casting Interviews" and "Too Hot for TV" contain profanity and nudity.) --Kathleen C. Fennessy
